The House of Mouse's Real-Life Moana Trailer Looks Strikingly Like a Animated Film

The first preview for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has arrived. Is it surprising that, similar to many of Disney's real-life reinterpretations, it appears a lot like an animated film and much less like a true live-action movie?

Breathtaking Imagery Which Keep an Cartoonish Look

The preview for the new iteration of Moana is certainly stunning. It includes grand visuals, beautiful soundtrack, and well-known personalities. Yet, it still looks like an animated film. The over-the-top effects show figures soaring, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into an insect and a winged creature. All of this is accomplished through computer-generated imagery and CGI. Much like previous Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the level of CGI is so high that it raises the question: what makes these films “live-action” other than the marketing label?

Narrative and Songs Audiences Know and Love

Whatever the case, this new Moana seems to be a reimagining of the first tale, including fresh versions of the beloved songs. According to an official summary, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an memorable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”

New Cast and Returning Faces

Meanwhile, the trailer features a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actor is stepping into the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the character in the original movies.

A key figure who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be portraying Maui. Of course, that character already resembled Johnson, so having him play the part in the real-life version seems reasonable.

Fan Favorite Mascot Shows Up

Perhaps the most important moment of the preview comes in the final shot. Moana's beloved chicken Hei Hei shows up, squawking at the camera. How else to introduce the film’s real mascot?

Arrival in Theaters

The real-life take of Moana debuts in cinemas on July 10, 2026.
