During payment at Aldi, I encountered a problem covering the cost of my shopping totaling $100. This wasn't that I couldn't afford it, but I had forgotten to transfer money over to our regular bank account. I was trying to move the money over quickly while at the register, but the banking app had crashed.
My two young children were with me alongside me, an older toddler and an infant, with one child started wailing. With a growing queue of other customers waiting after me, the store employee saved my grocery list for the items already scanned and saved it, then moved on to assisting the next shoppers.
Nervously, I reached out to my partner and pleaded with him to come down to the supermarket bringing his debit card and pay, as it didn't seem that I was going to be able to completing the payment. As I spoke to him, a lady in the line paid for her groceries – before saying to the employee, “I’ll pay for hers, too.”
I made an effort to decline, but she insisted. She simply stated:
“Just pay it back in the community somehow.”
I felt so honoured that a person would act so kindly toward me – it was incredibly thoughtful. That woman could see I felt stressed and ashamed at the busy checkout and came to my rescue.
Our community is relatively small, however, as the event unfolded rapidly, I am unsure who the person was that covered my shopping, so I haven’t been able to thank her.
But I did honour the generous stranger's wish. Previously, I possessed a large collection of baby stuff available through social media sales. But after that day, I removed the listings and posted in a local “buy swap sell” group so I could pass it all on for free to a person requiring assistance. A lady caring for a newborn foster child agreed to receive the items, and I felt happy that I managed to extend the goodwill.
